With Hyperia City, Disney Lorcana welcomes a new story: Coco from Disney and Pixar. Brennan DeCandio, a member of Ravensburger’s development and design team, shares a very fun deck built around the film’s world.
The idea: Musicians, songs and discard
The Coco cards in Hyperia City play with three things: the discard pile, songs and Musicians. Brennan focuses on the Musician side here. This is not quite the old Amber/Steel song deck: Ruby now joins the mix, giving access to far more Musicians than Steel alone.
Héctor Rivera, the star of the deck
Héctor’s Glimmers come in many forms in the set (Street Musician, Gone to Pieces, Worldwide Sensation), all sharing a love of singing and of songs in the discard pile.
Héctor Rivera – Worldwide Sensation digs through your deck to find the perfect song and give you a big singing advantage. His Showstopper ability has a twist: it finds a song to play for free, but sends the remaining cards to the discard pile instead of the bottom of the deck. That feeds the rest of the deck nicely.
The discard tools
- Miguel Rivera – Accomplished Musician returns any character from your discard pile to your hand, so a well-stocked discard pile is a real asset.
- Pepita – Imelda’s Right Hand does not care which cards are in your discard pile, only that there are at least ten of them, which unlocks a huge bonus.
- The song Remember Me lets you replay characters from the discard pile. The deck even includes a sneaky copy of Hercules – Young Savior (Wilds Unknown): bring him back with Remember Me, then play Hercules to return the song to your hand.
Ancestral Guitar and Ernesto de la Cruz
Ancestral Guitar helps your less “musical” Héctor and Miguel characters sing even more. It also has a second use alongside Ernesto de la Cruz – Ruthless Musician, a good pick if you expect Musician decks: pair him with the guitar and you can turn any character into a Musician so the Villain’s power can banish it.
Brennan notes there are countless other possibilities in Hyperia City and can’t wait to see what the community comes up with.
