General overview
Reality Fracture (set code: FRA) is the major narrative expansion of fall 2026. It is the 113th Magic: The Gathering set and, more importantly, the conclusion of the Metronome arc, the three-year storyline that began with Wilds of Eldraine (2023). It’s an event set — a special-format set designed as the climax of a long-running saga, in the same vein as March of the Machine (2023) for the Phyrexian arc.
Prereleases run from September 25 to October 1, 2026, with a worldwide release on October 2, 2026.
The setting: the Echoverse vs. the Multiverse
At the heart of the set lies the Echoverse: an alternate reality created by the planeswalker Jace Beleren, now known as The Theorist. In his vision of an ideal multiverse, Jace reshaped reality — but as head designer Mark Rosewater put it: “He might have missed slightly and hit dystopia.”
The Echoverse in practice
The Echoverse is a dark mirror version of the main Multiverse. Its planes and institutions exist in inverted, dystopian forms. The most striking example: Hexhaven, the shadowy counterpart to Strixhaven. Where Arcavios’s university was founded on five colleges paired with enemy color pairs, Hexhaven is built around allied color pairs:

Mechanics
🔄 Mirror legend pairs
The set’s most original packaging mechanic: each booster contains a pair of legendary cards, one from the main Multiverse and the other its Echoverse counterpart. The characters appear in a different color alignment, reflecting their dystopian alternate version. This is an unprecedented physical innovation in Magic’s history.
🔁 Prepare
The Prepare mechanic, introduced in Secrets of Strixhaven (April 2026), returns in this set. The choice makes narrative sense: since the Echoverse is a mirror version of Arcavios, the mechanical links between the two sets reinforce the narrative identity of the arc’s conclusion.
🎲 “What If?” design
Mark Rosewater confirmed that Reality Fracture answers one of the most recurring player requests in the game’s history: a set centered on alternate scenarios. Color-shifted versions of iconic planeswalkers have already been spotted, including a mirror-universe Chandra.
