General overview

Secrets of Strixhaven (set code: SOS) is the third major Magic: The Gathering expansion of 2026. It marks a grand return to the plane of Arcavios, five years after Strixhaven: School of Mages (2021), plunging players back into the halls of the Multiverse’s greatest magical university.

Prereleases took place from April 17 to 23, 2026 at WPN-certified stores, ahead of an official worldwide release on April 24, 2026, simultaneously in paper and on MTG Arena.

The setting: back to Strixhaven

Strixhaven University is organized around five colleges, each founded by an ancestral Elder Dragon and associated with a color pair and an academic discipline:

The set’s lore takes place several years after the events of 2021: characters like Killian Lu, Dina, and Rootha Squallheart have since graduated and are venturing out into the Multiverse. Five new students — Lluwen, Abigale, Sanar, Tam, and Kirol — make their first appearance, choosing their college at the start of the set.

The university faces a new threat, tied to the overarching Metronome story arc that will conclude with Reality Fracture in October 2026. A mysterious watermark — the Echoverse sigil — appears on the card depicting Ral Zarek, hinting at the cosmic upheaval to come.

⚠️ Note: production issues slightly affected the availability of the Commander decks and Bundles during the first week of release. Full allocation was restored by mid-May 2026.

Mechanics

🆕 Paradigm

The set’s signature mechanic. When a spell with Paradigm resolves, exile it. From then on, at the beginning of each of your first main phases, you may cast a copy of it for free — without paying its mana cost — for the rest of the game. Casting the copy remains optional each turn.

Paradigm appears on only five cards (a cycle of mythic rituals), but its strategic impact is considerable in long games. It’s reminiscent of the old epic legendary mechanic, but far more accessible.

🆕 Prepare

Creatures with Prepare enter the battlefield with an exiled spell underneath them. You may cast that prepared spell from exile; once cast, the creature loses its “prepared” designation. These cards are always considered creatures, regardless of zone (hand, graveyard, library).

🆕 College mechanics

Each college has its own exclusive mechanic:

• Opus (Prismari) — Rewards accumulating noncreature spells, with stronger bonuses once 5 or more mana has been spent in total.
• Increment (Quandrix) — Growing benefits with each activation, in the college’s mathematical spirit.
• Repartie (Silverquill) — Captures Silverquill’s rhetorical, verbal-dueling identity.
• Prepare / Infusion (Lorehold & Witherbloom) — Gradual power-ups rooted in history and the living world.
• Book (cross-set) — A new artifact type with page counters, first introduced in Urza’s Saga.

🔄 Returning mechanics

• Convergence — Rewards multicolor spells by counting the number of mana colors spent (0 to 5). Encourages 3+ color builds.
• Lesson subtype — Returns with a cycle of Paradigm cards, but the Learn mechanic does not return in this set.

The Mystical Archive

The standout feature from 2021 makes a grand return: 65 historic spells are included as bonus cards in booster packs, with an even more striking new card frame. Highly anticipated reprint confirmations include Force of Will and Vampiric Tutor in Mystical Archive treatment.

These cards retain the same legality as their original printings.

Story and lore

The set is part of the Metronome saga, the major 2026 story arc that will lead to the conclusion of Reality Fracture (October 2026). Secrets of Strixhaven reveals troubling early signs: an antagonistic faction threatens the university, and the Echoverse sigil — visible on the card depicting visiting professor Ral Zarek — signals that the Multiverse itself is in danger.

Formats and legality

Main set cards are legal in Standard, Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, Vintage, Pauper, and Commander as of April 24, 2026. Cards from the exclusive Commander decks are legal in Vintage, Legacy, Pauper, and Commander only.

A Secrets of Strixhaven Arena Direct event launched simultaneously on MTG Arena (entry: 25,000 Gold or 5,000 Gems, Sealed format).

What’s different from Strixhaven 2021

Verdict

Secrets of Strixhaven is a dense, strategic expansion clearly aimed at players who love spells-matter decks (instants and sorceries). Paradigm is on paper the year’s flashiest mechanic, while Convergence opens up interesting possibilities for multicolor in Limited.

The return of the Mystical Archive with new premium reprints guarantees strong collector interest, and the five Commander decks should find their usual audience.

A set not to be missed, for competitive players and collectors alike.
